Alloy 36 is a low thermal expansion nickel-iron alloy, 36% nickel. It is in the normal range of atmospheric temperatures nearly constant mass and has a low high temperature expansion coefficient. The alloy also maintains good strength and toughness in the low temperature range down to -260°C. It can be formed both hot and cold and is easily machined, with methods similar to those used for austenitic stainless steels. Alloy 36 can be welded using CF36 welding metal, available as standard wire for both TIG and MIG/MAG welding.
